Konecki is a brand building expert with extensive experience and a successful track record in running both retail and wholesale corporations. Before joining Kiva Designs, Tom's previous responsibilities have included VP/GMM for Bass® division of Phillips van Heusen, Executive Vice President of Born® division of HH Brown (a Berkshire-Hathaway company), Senior Vice President of New Business Development, and most recently President of Private Brands for R.G. Barry Corporation. At Kiva Designs, Konecki will be involved in all aspects of the business, grow existing brands, incubate new brands and diversify product categories for Kiva Designs.

Coffee Never Looked So Handsome
Los Angeles (July 12, 2011) - World Barista Champion 2010 and Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea's former Director of Education, Michael Phillips, has traded in both his post and the City of Chicago to start a coffee empire beginning in the City of Angels. In May 2011, Michael Phillips  set the specialty coffee world abuzz, announcing on Twitter(@1shot4theroad) he was moving to Southern California to launch a new endeavor with two other prominent names in the coffee industry, Chris Owens(@singleorigin) and Tyler Wells (@tylerjwells). The three have launched Handsome Coffee Roasters which is already developing a groundswell of fans seeking to make Los Angeles the coffee capital of the U.S.
The West Coast is about to wake up and smell the Handsome Coffee in many ways.  Phillips and his partners have set up a Roasting Works facility in the Arts District of Downtown LA. This headquarters will feature a world-class coffeebar and offer a look at Handsome's small-batch roasting works. As a micro-roaster, Handsome will only use single-origin beans, meaning each bag of coffee will come from a unique farm, region or country. This helps accentuate the signature flavors of the world's finest beans. Truly, they earn the right to dub their coffee "handmade & damn handsome".
With all three men being of coffee celebrity status, Handsome Coffee Roasters sprinted out of the gate, garnering international attention and acclaim by offering a "beta" program, dubbed the "Handsome Wager" allowing a select few to buy its first batches of coffee before the company's full offerings were available. Twitter followers of the company were offered a chance in early June to be one of the "#firstforty" customers of Handsome by subscription for the first 40 that emailed. Handsome Coffee would then mail off its first roasted bags of beans for $50 to anywhere in the world. Within hours they had hundreds of emails tallying up from 5 different countries and nearly every state across the US.
With such a huge demand, In mid July via Twitter, Handsome Coffee Roasters (@HandsomeRoaster) will announce a new Saturday subscription series for Angelenos only to come and meet Handsome Coffee as well as pick up a bag of coffee.
Handsome Coffee Roasters also has plans to party like a caffeinated rock star with what they will introduce as the HandsomeTraveler coffeebar later this month. The Traveler offers turn key Handsome espresso and brewed coffeebar & Handsome mobile baristas for any event. Manhattan Bridge Skatepark awarded funds to be Revamped and Reramped

From Kabul to New York City, GAMECHANGERS Grants Enable Community Groups to Empower Youth Through Sports

New York, NY (June 20, 2011) In honor of tomorrows’ Go Skateboarding Day, the official holiday that celebrates skateboarding, Architecture for Humanity and NIKE are pleased to announce the next Gamechangers grant recipient, Steve Rodriguez (founder of 5boro Skateboards in NYC), and plans to revitalize the Manhattan Bridge Skatepark in New York City. Given its proximity to popular downtown skate spots, and the recent closing of the Brooklyn Banks, it has become the skatepark of choice for many skateboarders and home to numerous skateboarding events. It is time to create a world-class venue for the best skaters in New York City.

Through the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s Adopt-A-Park program, the Gamechangers grant will adopt & transform Coleman Oval Park into a destination place for both local and international skateboarders. The Gamechangers grant will completely revamp and literally reramp the park in partnership with the local and skate communities. The skatepark is located within the diverse neighborhood (East Village, Lower East Side, parts of Chinatown), serving approximately 172,000 residents, 17% of whom are under the age of 18. Coleman Oval Park provides a much needed place for recreation in a neighborhood with little green or open space. The skatepark attracts youth from all five boroughs, the tri-state area, as well as out of state and international visitors to the area. Improvements to the park will come from Gamechangers Sports Micro-Venture Fund.

The Gamechangers Sports Micro-Venture Fund, a partnership between Architecture for Humanity and NIKE, is a revolving grants program that funds the design and construction of innovative, sustainable, and safe places to play and gather. The fund has supported dozens of sports programs around the world – from Argentina to China to Haiti to Kenya.

In 2009, the fund supported the construction of Skateistan, an indoor skatepark in Kabul, Afghanistan. After two years in the making the skatepark, Kabuls' largest indoor sports facility, stands as a testament to a group of dedicated individuals who believe in the power of sports to create social change. Skateistan is the world's first co-ed skateboarding school. It engages urban and internally-displaced youth through skateboarding while providing them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment programs. Skateistan is also taking part in Go Skateboarding Day – connecting skaters from Kabul to New York City.

Over the summer 2011 Architecture for Humanity will host several community based forums within the park and surrounding community to discuss how to rebuild the skatepark. This project will break ground in the fall of 2011.

Star Studded Film Just Accepted Into the American Black Film Festival

Los Angels, CA (June 15, 2011) – NFL Superstar, Terrell Owens will make his big screen debut in Dysfunctional Friends,  a film that is now one of five films being showcased in the American Black Film Festival, competing in the Narrative Features category of the festival this July in Miami.  The film, which is set to be officially released later this year,  is a comedy/ drama about a group of college friends who reunite after the sudden death of their larger then life friend Dennis (Keith Robinson). In addition to Terrell Owens, the flick boasts an all star cast of Meagan Good, Stacey Dash, Tatyana Ali, Essence Atkins, Vanessa Simmons, Erica Hubbard, Hosea Sanchez, Wesley Jonathan, Jason Weaver, Datari Turner, Reagan Gomez, Persia White, Stacy Keibler, Rodney Jerkins, Dennis White, Antwon Tanner, Meagan Markle, Christian Keys, and Laila Odom.

 

“I am grateful to be making my film debut with such an illustrious cast of actors. To be able to work & learn from these immensely talented actors I count as one of my greatest experiences. I am thrilled that our film is now being screened at the American Black Film Festival this summer,” said Terrell Owens.

Dysfunctional Friends was written and directed by newcomer and Howard Alum Corey Grant. The producers are Datari Turner (Video Girl, Another Happy Day, L.U.V) and Greg Carter (American Dream).

The addition of Terrell Owens to the cast of Dysfunctional Friends was a major story line in the latest season of the hit series "The T.O. Show" on VH1 which chronicles the sports superstar’s life away from the gridiron. It will premiere with its third season in August 2011.

Chicago, IL (May 16, 2011)-Philanthroper, the immensely successful startup that promotes charities as “daily deals” for only $1, relaunched today to accept international donations and using PayPal. Now, anyone anywhere can donate $1 to a new charity every day with a bank account or credit card. This news means that thousands of existing international subscribers from around the world will be able to make donations for the first time with a single click.

“When we originally launched three months ago, we honestly hadn’t predicted the immediate international response,” admits Founder Mark Wilson. “From day one, we were receiving letters and tweets from Canada, the UK and Australia, all from excited people wanting to join in and donate their $1. But our payment system only supported US bank accounts. We really couldn’t be more thrilled to finally support our friends abroad.”

Philanthroper will continue to showcase one new nonprofit “deal” everyday. As with any daily deal site, an email arrives in the user’s inbox each morning while it’s simultaneously featured on the site’s front page. With a single button, anyone can give $1 to this cause – no more or less – spanning 501(c)3 nonprofits in arts, education, animals, environment, human rights, and health.

Philanthroper removes all barriers from donation. Featured groups are vetted, and while most sites ask for minimum donations of $10, $25 or even $50, Philanthroper only accepts donations of $1. Plus, once a user syncs Philanthroper with their PayPal account, this donation only takes a single click.

Donating couldn’t be simpler. Users open their email, read a bit about a new group doing good and click to give $1. Then they can share the good deed across social networks. There’s no easier way to make a difference.

Philanthroper is supported by advertisers and never takes any cut from user donations. In response to the site’s hundreds of requests to accept credit card payments and international payments, Paypal provides the most efficient, 100% secure online payment solution for international donors.

In addition to the global payments, Philanthroper is also offering a new Stats Page for donors to keep track of and earn medals for their donations. Stats will provide the user with their full total of contributions made to date (beginning from their first ever donation made on Philanthroper.com) along with a running tally of causes they’ve tweeted and shared on Facebook. Users will even be able to see how often they’ve given to particular categories of causes, like Health, Animals or Environment, and receive medals based upon this participation.

“Just as Nike+ gets people off the couch, we think Philanthroper Stats will encourage and reward people for giving back,” explains Wilson.

Since its launch in late January, Philanthroper has featured 73 nonprofits and has raised over $21,000 for these of charities – all in $1 donations. Their goal is to make charity a habit. And the formula works, as over 85% Philanthroper account holders have already given to more than one cause. The site’s “daily deals’ this week includes MADD, Oxfam, National Dating Abuse Helpline, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Miriam’s Kitchen.
